Academic Achievements

October 21, 2011: The Creative Writing Department had 16 students enter the PTSA Reflections Competition: 2 students won in the High School and Literature categories!

February 26, 2012: Woodside's Odyssey of the Mind Team wins 1st Place in the Regional Competition!

March 19, 2012: The World Language National Honor Society Inductions were held. Six students were inducted into the French National Honor Society; two students were inducted into the German National Honor Society; and five students were inducted into the Spanish National Honor Society. Congratulations to our new members!

April 14, 2012: Woodside's Odyssey of the Mind Team takes 2nd Place in their division and category in the State Competition! They have advanced to the World Competition which will be held in Iowa in May!

May 24, 2012: Woodside National Honor Society inducted forty-one new members. Congratulations to our new inductees!

 

Individual and Group Achievements 

April 20, 2012: Ms. Kanehl and the yearbook students were interviewed by Mr. Joe Flanagan for Journalism Day 2012 presented by Busch Gardens. Not only did they get to speak with local journalists and photojournalists, but they also appeared on the 5:30 news! The students did an AMAZING job of representing Woodside in a positive manner!

April 21, 2012: The Youth Volunteer Corps and Youth Development Program collected over 2,300 cans for the canned food drive. This was the largest number of cans collected by any of the participating Hampton Roads organizations. The YVC and the YDP also took 1st place on Saturday for our CANstructions of the Eiffel Tower and the Mayan Temple. Congratulations to the YVC and the YDP!

Creative Writing Awards: One of our creative writing students received a scholarship from the Hispanic League of America, and another was recognized by the USAA's Academy for Academic Excellence for her submission in their spring essay contest. Additionally, five students have had their writings published this year!

Woodside's Voice: The Voice's Literary Magazine Editors and their Sponsor assisted the "Our Lady of Mt. Carmel" Women's Guild with the preparation of 50 holiday gift bags. In addition, the Voice also held a fund raising and materials collection campaign to benefit the Heritage Humane Society, a no kill animal shelter in Williamsburg.

As of May 11, 2012, Woodside's Seniors have earned over $5.5 million in scholarships! Congratulations class of 2012!

Community Service during the 2011-2012 School Year:

  • Raised $2,300 for the "Pasta for Pennies" program to help find a cure for Leukemia and Lymphoma
  • CTE delivered 1,237 pounds of canned foods to the Peninsula Food Bank
  • Key Club delivered 52 turkeys to Fort Eustis
  • Woodside had the most pints of blood donationed to the blood bank from all the Peninsula high schools
  • The Drama Department's fruit sale donated 23 boxes of fruit to the Peninsula Food Bank

October 21, 2011: Woodside ends Phoebus' 52 game winning streak!
November 3, 2011: Woodside Football team wins Peninsula District Championship

Volleyball:
November 3, 2011: Woodside Boys' Volleyball team wins Peninsula District Title

Basketball:
February 23, 2012: Woodside Girls Win Eastern Region Quarter Finals

 

Teacher Recognition

Congratulations to Erin Hudson of the Social Studies Department for earning National Board Certification!

Congratulations to Sara Brandt of the the English Department on being named Teacher of the Year for Newport News Public Schools! 

 

Accomplishments in the Arts

March 17, 2012: Meistersingers, Jubilee Chorale, and Select Women's Ensemble all earned Superior ratings at District Assessment this year!  The District Assessment took place at bethel High School in Hampton. Five students make ALL-State Chorus, and one student made Honor's Choir.

April 19-21, 2012: The spring musical, "South Pacific" included over 150 students working side by side on stage, backstage, and in the orchestra pit to create a classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. We also donated partial proceeds to CHKD on memory of Holly Shapiro.

Peninsula Fine Arts Center: Woodside's Art Department had 13 student artworks selected into the juried "Preface 2012 High School Exhibition" at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center. In addition, 50 Seniors participated in the "Senior Miniature Show" at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center. One student received an honorable mention; one student received "Best in Show" for the Senior Miniature Show.  Both Shows will be on display at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center until May 27, 2012.  Additionally, Woodside took 3rd place and Honorable Mention in the Peninsula Fine Arts Center's "Artistic Verses Contest." On Saturday, May 12, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center held an "Artistic Verses" reception for the contestants. Six Woodside students read their original poetry, and Woodside was the best represented high school at the event.
